Running a show
Live polls (Beta)
Let the audience vote on their phones with a 6-digit code, then show animated results on air.
A poll contains your questions and audience answers. A poll graphic is the visual design that displays them. Its saved rows choose how results look; they do not define the question or the answer options. You can use one poll with several graphic designs.
Before you start: turn polls on and add a poll graphic
- 1Open your show, then Show Add-Ons. Turn on Live polls. A Polls button appears at the top of the show.
- 2Add a poll design to the show list: click Add to playout list, open the Marketplace tab and choose a design from Miri Live Poll. You only need to do this once per show.
The Polls window: four steps
Click Polls. If the show has no poll yet, or you click New poll, you start by naming the poll. A strip across the top shows the four steps — Name, Question, Voting and On air. Named polls open on Question, and you can click any step to move around.
- 1Question — pick a poll type from the tiles (Multiple choice, Pick several, Yes / No, Rating scale, Star rating, Number or Text), then type the question and the answers, one per line. Edits save when you click outside a box. The question marked On screens is the one graphics show.
- 2Voting — click the big Open voting button. The QR code, 6-digit code and live vote count are shown beside it. Opening voting also makes this the poll your show's graphics follow. Click Close voting when time is up.
- 3On air — choose the poll graphic, a layer, and one of three looks — Join (QR + code), Join + live results or Results — then click Take. The chart follows how the poll was built, so you never pick a chart type. Change the look and click Update on air to switch it live, or Take off to clear it.
Join + live results
The Join + live results look puts the QR code and join code beside live results, so viewers see how to vote and how it's going at the same time. Results use bars for choice and yes/no questions, a gauge for ratings and numbers, and a word cloud for text. On a wide lower third the QR code sits at the left with compact results beside it.
Results follow the question
| Question type | Full Screen | Lower Third / Sidebar |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice / Pick several | Bar race | Bars |
| Yes / No | Bar race | Tug-of-war (lower third), bars (sidebar) |
| Rating scale / Number | Gauge | Gauge |
| Star rating | Star average | Star average |
| Text — Words | Word cloud (filler words like “the” skipped) | Word cloud |
| Text — Statements | Whole answers, most common largest | Whole answers |
For a Text question, choose Words or Statements under the question. Use Statements when people answer with a sentence: each answer is kept whole, and identical answers (ignoring capitals and punctuation) are counted together.
Turn on Hide results until voting closes to show only the vote count while voting is open; the results appear as soon as you close voting.
Answer formats
| Question type | What to enter | Useful results |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | One option per line (up to 10). Each submission selects one option. | Bars, bar race, donut, percent tiles |
| Pick several | One option per line. Voters select more than one answer. | Bars, race, donut, tiles; percentages describe selections, not unique people |
| Yes / No | A two-way question, such as ‘Should we add a second night?’ | Tug-of-war, bars or donut |
| Rating scale | Minimum, maximum and low/high labels; for example 1 ‘Not at all’ to 10 ‘Absolutely’. | Gauge, histogram or big average number |
| Star rating | Set the maximum star count (5 by default). | Star average, gauge, histogram or big number |
| Number | Ask for a numeric answer and optionally set minimum/maximum bounds. | Average, gauge or histogram |
| Text | Ask for a short answer, up to 140 characters. A one-word prompt works well for a cloud. | Word cloud; quotes require editorial care |
Use the up/down arrows to reorder questions. The trash icon on a question removes it; the poll-level trash icon deletes the entire poll. Prepare question types and options before collecting votes so existing answers keep their intended meaning.
| Marketplace design | Looks included |
|---|---|
| Live Poll · Full Screen | Join, Join + live results, Results |
| Live Poll · Lower Third | Join, Join + live results, Results |
| Live Poll · Sidebar | Join, Join + live results, Results |
Choosing a poll design from the Marketplace opens it in the editor with the poll settings showing. Phones answer at gfx.miri.tech/poll with the 6-digit code, or by scanning the QR code — no account needed. People can submit more than once; this is for engagement, not a ballot.
A worked example: song vote, then star rating
Create a Multiple choice question with four songs and a Star rating question named “Rate tonight’s show”. Add Live Poll · Full Screen to the show. Choose the song question’s On screens, open voting, and in the On air step Take the Full Screen design with Join + live results. Later switch the look to Results and click Update on air for a bar race. Then choose the rating question’s On screens — the same graphic switches to a star average by itself. Neither changing the graphic nor changing the question requires a new join code.
Text moderation: words are not approved quotes
Text submissions containing common blocked words are filtered automatically. In the Polls window, click a word in the result list to hide it from the word cloud. It appears under Hidden words; click it there to restore it. Hiding a word is not the same as deleting a submission or approving a full quote.
Reset, reuse and delete
- Close voting stops answers without removing them. Reopening allows further answers to be added to the existing totals.
- Clear votes (the reset-arrow icon) asks for confirmation and deletes every answer across the selected poll’s questions. Questions, graphic designs and the join code remain. Close voting first when preparing a clean restart.
- Deleting a poll removes its questions and votes and retires its code permanently. Create a new poll for a different code; old codes are never reassigned.
Before your audience arrives
- 1Confirm the intended poll in the selector and the intended question with On screens.
- 2Open voting, scan the Join graphic from a phone and submit a test answer. Confirm it in the Polls window, Preview and the actual cloud output.
- 3Check each result row you plan to use, including question readability and the QR/code size on the real display.
- 4Close voting and clear the test votes. Reopen at the planned moment. Keep internet available to both operators and audience phones.
Troubleshooting
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Only a QR code; no chart | In the On air step choose a results look or Join + live results, then Update on air. |
| Wrong question | Use On screens beside the intended question in the Polls window. |
| Wrong poll or code | Select the correct poll, go to On air and click Show this poll instead. |
| No results or an unsuitable view | Check the question type against the selected results row, then confirm votes were submitted. |
| Phone says voting is unavailable | Check Open voting, the code, internet access and whether the poll was deleted. If temporarily limited, wait before trying again. |
| Old votes are still included | Closing and reopening does not reset totals. Close voting and use Clear votes for a clean start. |
| Works in cloud but not Local Hub | Live Polls are not supported on Local Hub screens yet; use cloud playout. |
| Cannot change questions or open voting | The Polls controls need operator access to the show. |
